The short version

Cream, balm and ointment are not the same thing
A cream is the lightest of the three — it spreads thinly and absorbs quickly. A balm is thicker and stays put. An ointment is thicker again, usually in a small tin or tube, and is used sparingly on small areas. Which one suits you is mostly about the texture you like and how much skin you are covering.
